I started basic agility with my GSD. he is 14 months old is we are doing pretty good. I am basically doing it for fun so both my dog and me get enough exercise. I might look into tracking too. I probably won't show him or anything like that though. The trainer at the agility class wants me to get him fixed. she says it is better for him health wise and should calm him dow a little. He really isn't giving me any problems other than being a normal dog. He is marking a lot though. I don't know what to do. Any opinions would be appreciated. Oh yeah both of his parents are Schutshund trained. Thanks.
The "it will calm him down" argument is usually BS. If he is an active dog then he is an active dog and if he is not giving you any problems I wouldn't fix him just cause somebody else wants him fixed. He is your dog and you are the better judge of his needs than she is. Why does she want him "calmed down"? At 14 mos it won't do anything about the marking behaviour.
He's your dog. I agree with Tiggy. Don't do something just because someone else says you should. Agility looks like a lot of fun and I may get slammed for saying this but most agility classes I've seen are full of nice people that don't necessarily understand dogs. Not all of the people, so don't kill me.
I am with the trainer. Not about the calming down thing. If you don't plan on showing him, or breeding him get him fixed. Why take the chance of an accidental mating? Also, he will be less likely to roam. Contain any dominance problems that could arise. Better health. I would get him fixed. JMO
We got into a discussion on this topic a few days ago. Lots of good opinions. Can any one direct Phil R to the proper site? I can't find it.
Still having problems with that dern typewriter I see...
The thread the other day was more geared toward a person who wants to have a protection dog. I am also with the trainer and say neuter the dog. It is up to you, but if you have seen a dog with chronic prostate infections suffer because the owner "might" breed him someday, you would agree. There are plenty of GOOD studs out there so the need to keep an agility dog intact is not too high on my list.
Todd, aren't you supposed to be packing or something?
So, to get back on topic. Accidental breedings are just that, accidents. No one intended for the neighbors ugly dog to get tied with the poodle, but it happens every day.
I would think agility would be a lot easier if your dog wasn't too interested in where the bitch peed near the ring 5 mins earlier too.
Picky, picky, picky There were still good reasons for and against. My own personel thoughts are similar to yours. Withou a valid reason not to do it, do it.
