If this is already answered somewhere else, feel free to just point me thereto. If not...
...do these 2 things go hand-in-hand? Is it possible to have a dog who's physically calm when not presented with the stimuli which engage the drives? Or is a general high energy level that which...hmmm..."catalizes" the drives?
Points for those who decipher what the hell I'm asking.
I believe the maturity level helps. I have an apbt that is about 5 and goes into HIGH drive when it's time to work but is very calm when he's in his run or just hanging out.
The two definitely don't have to go hand in hand. Some of the best dogs I've ever seen are totally normal, calm, composed dogs that can live in the house or hang out at my vet's office all day with no commotion, but then you flip a switch and they are tazmainian devils.
I have some pretty high energy sled dogs that can sleep all day by your feet and are nice calm, quiet companions however when you get out the equipment....
My little guy, and I say little cuz he is 61lbs of black and tan shedding machine, looks like the worlds nicest housepet. He hangs out at my feet during classes(80 mins) and at home, but he has PLENTY of drive. Anyone who has seen the little butthead can attest to that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> He is also fairly soft, which was hard for me at first because I had to be physical with the schnauzer(they can be kinda thick) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> and once I figured him out he has been a joy to handle.
