Hi all
I know dogs are not supposed to sleep in the bedroom, but should they be allowed to go in there at all?
My bedroom is 25x15 and has a balcony so its not very "den" like. GSDs follow you everywhere, so it seems kinda mean to make them sit outside the bedroom door while I'm on the balcony (its safe)or putzing around in the room.
What do you guys do?
I dont't want him in the bed but he can move freely in the house. Also at night he can pick out his sleeping place (every place but our bed).
I like to have him around. A dog is a pack animal and we like to be his pack. Where we go he can go.
I am with Sch3Fh2, I know it is not for everyone, but goober sleeps on the bed with his head on the pillow. The new pup will not, but only because I would need a bigger bed!
At first my dog was going to sleep on his bed on the floor of the bedroom, NOT ON THE BED NO WAY!
Then when my alarm went off he would get up, put his muzzle on the bed and give you THE EYES. Ok up he came.
Then it was about 1/2 hour before the alarm went off and I was somewhat awake anyways. Ok up he came.
Then I would wake up in the morning and there he'd be ON THE BED!
I gave up.
He warms the sheets, too. I didn't get a dog to banish him from the bedroom. My little BooBoo (Max) can sleep on the bed if he wants.
Of course I never had a dominance problem with him.
Our's have the run of the house too. The big ones aren't allowed on the furniture (except one futon in a room they don't get in to much). The Mini sleeps in bed with us and will occasionaly gets to big for her britches and try to take over my pillow and not let me in bed. It only takes a few seconds to remind her of her place. The other 2 aren't allowed because the bed isn't big enough to take another 175 pounds of dog on the bed. The big problem with the total access is that the big dogs won't let me sleep past 6:30 in the morning. One licks my face and the other pushes on my head with his chin until I get up (If that doesn't work he soaks his beard in water and tries again... that always works).
One of the big reasons we keep the dogs is for protection of the house and they aren't much good if they don't have the run of the house.

Seeing as how everyone is 'fessing up and Ed is going to kill us.... I guess I can confess that I have a bedroom floor full of huskies at night. Everybody has their own mat (the pup in her crate)
They are not very dominant dogs and because of the work we do with them they pretty much know their place. My house is really small and if they slept anywhere else at night it would be a tripping hazard. Even though they have their own beds I have to admit the old broad (at 14 yrs of age) is sometimes on the end of my bed in the morning and trying to be very inconspicuos about it. It is only the three house huskies in the bedroom - not the whole team, in case you had a picture of wall to wall fur rug running thru your head!
My dog also has free run of the house and furniture.Except for the living room and dining room. Those are the forbitten rooms, same rules apply to me and the kids. Her sleeping habbits are more sesonal. She Prefers sleeping alone during the warm months.
Here I am trying to be good...well actually it was a sneaky way of trying to find out how really bad I was being for letting the dogs in the bedroom...and you guys are worse than me!!!
My dogs (I just got 2 this week ) are not allowed on the bed or any furniture, but they do have the run of the house, so I guess I haven't ruined them for SchH then huh? No dominance issues so far. She who has control of the leash and the food is Alpha!
