What's the minimum weight many of the board members feel a protection dog should be?
I've seen lately people having dogs that're smaller on average for protection work or training. I've seen small Malinois, Heelers, Small APBTs, and so on. Some of these dogs I've seen on the web 35 to 45lbs. I guess this makes me curious to read your thoughts.
Brad, I watched a young Mal female work yesterday. ( I think 12 months old) She weighed around 45 pounds. She seemed intense, well focused, really quick. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I new to schH so I guess size doesn't matter as long as the routine is completed.
I have to relate my favorite story about a small dog doing a big man real raw.
Caellie van den Horstshoeve, a female Dutch Shepherd that I saw some time ago in the flesh. She straight dropped this guy that was over 200lbs HARD on the turf. Hit with a full grip on his chest and all four paws in his gut. All he could do was laugh when she was called off. . .we were all busting up. It was pretty -F-ing cool.
A small Malinois that has what it takes to do the work is like Bruce Lee. Speed = Power! They are also much harder to decoy because of thier ability to turn on a dime at 35mi.
I agree, I have seen some 50lb Dutch Shepherds hit hard. I guess the reason I mentioned the little APBTs or the Heelers is would one be worried an intruder might be able to punt one?

I guess this is based on the assumption that the intruder can "get them", before they take him down? Sometimes it's hard enough to avoid a larger dog that's fast...cut down the size and double the speed and agility...that makes it EXTREMELY difficult to avoid the dog, much less get in a "tactical strike" on one. Just something to think about. Personally, I prefer small end of the standard dogs...fast, athletic, high endurance, and hit a lot harder than you would think.
I'm with you, I like the Shepherd breeds. 65lbs Malinois all the way up to 90lb GSDs.
I was talking to this guy yesterday and he asked me what I thought the minimum weight would be, and it made me wonder. He wasn't too crazy about the tails or the big dogs, I think he liked the APBT because of their size.
