I was recently asked by my vet if my GSD pup had any papers, we got her as a gift without any papers and everyone that meets her says that she definitely looks like the genuine article, including the vet, but when I asked about her ears (one was down at the top & now they are both slighyly folded at the top) going back up (they were both straight up when she was about 6 1/2) the vet said that I should get papers for her because without them she wouldn't be guaranteed straight ears anyway.
When I phoned the breeder she told me that she has papers for her 2 adult dogs but none for the pups. Am I missing something here???
Can someone let me know what's what with the papers please.
If the breeder has AKC registration papers for the parents you should be able to get the pup registered also. You'll need the parents registration #s though.
This is just for the AKC though, as they have few requirements for registration.
Well, first off your vet is wrong about the papers guaranteeing straight ears. Papers are just that... a piece of paper. It is totally possible that the owner DOES have papers but didn't register the litter, why I don't know, but it is possible. On the other hand it is also possible, that only one parent had papers and the other didn't, at any rate there is no way to tell now.
What's with the papers? Your guess is as good as any.
Did the vet mean that if you don't have papers saying the dog is a GSD, then you really have no guarantee that the ears will come up because you don't know if the dog is a pure GSD?
Maybe that's what they meant? All AKC papers show is that the dog is bred to other dogs that have been registered as "pure breed" dogs for a few generations.
Nothing else, if you have a guarantee it is something that is given by the breeder of their own free will to their customers. Has nothing to do with registration papers.
Haven't y'all heard of the latest medical mumbo jumbo on ears standing? Fan them twice a day with paper and the increased circulation will make them stand up . A paper with the AKC seal on it works twice as good.
Romulus, in all serious it's a complete waste of your time and money to try to get papers for the dog. They don't change anything. I've seen mixed breeds with standing ears and purebreds with floppers. Papers don't mean that your dog is a purebred either. I've seen dogs that were obviously mixes that had papers (the female got out after she was bred to the other male, same old story).

Van Camp, the vet did mean that if you haven't got any guarantee of the pup being a pure GSD breed then there's nothing to say that her ears will come up.
I will try the Ed Frawley method of straightening her ears if they don't come up naturally within the next couple of months.
Thanks for all of the replies, I appreciate your time.
Romulus... You may want to start now. I am guessing from your post that she is AT least 6.5 months old. Your window of time is almost out. Wait and see will not fix it.
Sorry if my comments came off sounding harsh on the previous post.
Again, even if she is a pure GSD there is a chance she may never have erect ears. For example, my mom's papered yorkie has floppy ear tips...
There is just a simple solution. Ed recommends "taponizing" the ears with female tampons and tape.. Hmmm.. Although I never tried it.. It makes sense.. Another use for tampons
I believe Ed got that idea from Cindy Easton Leave it to a women to have such a brilliant idea Cindy's method works great....
Between the tampons for ears and maxi pads for foot problems Tampax has you covered!
