I am getting nothing on my other post, so I'm trying again. I need a good dog shampoo for deodorizing and cleaning. My poochie stinks bad. Regular stuff isn't cutting it-I want to bathe him once and be done for the week, not over and over trying to eliminate this particular stink.
(and for me to complain about dog stink, trust me, it's foul).
Anyone got a favorite shampoo?
ps-I am maybe wondering is this hooks? It has been a long time since I smelled wormy puppies, but I think they make the dog stink? I got a container from the vet and am going to bring a sample in-am I being silly?

I'll bite.
I don't think your being silly...there are medical possibilities that could be causing a smell that keeps eminating. Where is it coming from??....coat/skin, anus, etc...I would check him out just to be safe.
On shampoos I have no idea...I go to a self service cleaner but the supplies are provided like the shampoo....I use a oatmeal type because it's good with the skin(sensitivity wise)and once in a while then a seperate shampoo that is mainly for deodorizing.
Every week is too much...he has no time for the oils to return, for the coat and skin to return to normal.

Thanks Patrick
Hmmm-no weekly bath? Alright then.
He does like the bath-one of the reasons I do it actually. He will get in the shower with me if I don't keep pushing him out. (cries and whines the whole time I'm in there if he can't come too-he is in the bathroom with me while I shower).
He crawls in the tub sometimes if it has water sticking in it. He likes to get in the full bath and lie down in the water. He also drinks lots of water, and sticks his hands and his head in the water bowl and in the toilet.
I think I need to find a place for him to try swimmming.

Hi Alex - have you thought of trying the skunk shampoo recipe that was posted a couple of weeks back? (peroxide and baking soda etc) might get rid of the funky odour and restore puppy to sweetness (or at least just normal wet dog smell!)
Sounds like looking for a swimming spot is in order - doesn't sound like you'll have any problems getting him to swim!

I swear by MelaMiracle Premium Pet shampoo. It has tea tree oil in it. The oil leaves your dog with a pleasant eucalyptus smell for at least 2 weeks, and especially when your dog gets wet.
A bath once a month is fine for most dog breeds.
Here is the link in case you want to read about it.
It is a bit $$$ but a 1 Gal. container of concentrate lasted almost 7 years for me and I bathe (my dog, silly!) every 2 weeks.

I use Head&Shoulders on my dogs.I heard it is not greatest because it dries out skin but I have never found it to do this.During the summer we take the dogs down to the river alot. They always seem to find a dead, rotten old fish to roll in,they just love it.It is the most discusting smell ever, and Head&Shoulders always was very effective. The scent is not overpowering if your like my partner and don't like the dogs smelling like poodles. We find the Classic Clean is the best.Hope this helps!!

I know it's tempting to bath your new pup on a weekly basis, but there's natural oils that should build up in the dogs coat for a number of reasons. Alex I think your giving this dog way to much freedom in the house jmho. BE CAREFUL if you start training obedience with hot dogs and continue to let him in the shower with you..heh...heh...heh.
Seriously though. I know a guy who took his Mal pup in the shower with him all the time and now at nine months the dog does have a mystery skin problem that he can't get control of.
Have any of the board members tried the dry bath method? Fosters & Smith sells a powder bath product to deodorize, etc..etc

we did stop the weekly baths on the advice of other posters. I have limited the dogs freedom indoors quite a bit-he is in the bathroom with me when I shower because well, that's what i did with my bitch and she turned out pretty good. I like to think we are reinforcing that where i go, he goes. Also I think the steam from the shower opens their sinuses...noses, whatever. I like to keep puppies flowing-maybe this is silly.
Getting in the shower with me is a weird thing-although I did have a kitty who'd do this as well. It takes puppy man awhile to work up his nerve and I give no encouragement-he vocalizes and makes several trial runs with his nose first. Usually he ends up half in/half out. So it's not like he's taking the shower with me, really-just kinda moistening his head.
I sing in the shower (heck, I sing in the car too) and this may be what intrigues him but he doesn't try to get up front in the car with me when I sing, so...who knows.
He's a pup, and this means he's a bit foolish. I don't think draping his upper half into my shower is hurting him, and well, I don't feel he's taking over either. I think he's just being a curious, foolish pup. He definitely has a sense of humor and if we can do something that makes me laugh and no one is endangered, is it so wrong? I don't know-the cat stayed controllable, and she was a siamese-the very hardest kind of animal to live with.
ps. I kept him out of my bathroom the last couple days-and now he is leaping into the water dish and spilling it everywhere every time I fill it. I think shower access controls his water needs in a tidier way.
Sigh-but if the concensus is the dog will go ...to the dogs, so to speak, if I keep letting him in the shower, then I'll stop.

Alex, I think the thing Scott was talking about wouldn't apply, as I seem to remember that you are female and don't have any weenie like appendages. I could be wrong...
I don't worry if a dog follows me around. My own house dog has a bit of a voeuristic tendancy as well. That, and he licks the shower floor after I get out?!? Dogs are wierd.
With that being said. I had a foster dog that would stand half in and half out of the shower. Freaked me out the first time he did it, and he was getting rained on.

Right you are-no weinie like appendages here! I am glad to hear a neutral opinion on the shower entering-it was a little freaky at first but it strikes me as harmless and amusing. Laughter with dogs is good.
I told the breeder when I was explaining to him what puppy to pick for me, "I may not ever title with the dog, but we must laugh together". I think that guy did real good!
