I just sit here and smile as I think of the people on this board that told me my dobie would be no good because I got him from a "show" breeder. I had someone on here ask me why on earth would I get a dobie for a pet? Why not a lab or a golden or some other dog that I can't stand. Just let me say that this is the BEST dog I have EVER had. He is my devoted and loyal friend. He lays in my lap - he sleeps with me. At 4 months old he boldy approaches strangers that come into our house. He barks until I say that's enough and then when they've been in the house for awhile he will warm up to them quickly. He is beside me at all times and is very closely bonded to me. I have never had a dog like this before and never felt so closely bonded to one. I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that if anyone ever laid a hand on me it would be ugly!! This I KNOW so please don't tell me that I don't. Just thought I'd let people know that the dog people were certain would turn out to have problems is just fine.

I'm glad you're happy with your pooch, but . . . how "ugly" could it get with a 4 month old dobermutt?

If you "know beyond a shadow of a doubt" about a 4mo old pup, then you have just shown your ignorance. A 4mo old pup (ANY breed) is not mature enough to handle a major conflict, and will probably be pushed to flight before it would react "properly". The dog does not have the instinct, training, and experience to handle a threat. Also, about the "warming up quickly", so he makes friends after they've been there a while, that's good, BUT a threat can come from anywhere, what if one of those he's "warmed up to" suddenly became an aggressor? He would probably be in a lot of conflict, and assuming his age, might bark but wouldn't do much if anything else.
Please, before you go any further, learn about protection dogs, learn about dog behaviour, and learn about training, because in this one post, you've shown that you are naive and REALLY don't know what you're talking about.

Naa-Dei, keep in mind this is a FOUR MONTH OLD PUPPY!!! I don't care what breed it is, it's not going to get "ugly" with anyone. Beyond that, see MikeR's comments.

I agree with Mike, and owners of this kind are what give some breeds bad names. As for problems, maybe none now at 4 months, but if not properly worked/trained most likely will have problems in the future.

Pauline, Good luck with your pet. I'm sure you will take good care of it.
When you begin to have a few minor problems or setbacks with it. Come back to this Forum and ask the board members for help.

Pauline,,
Remember your 4 month pup is just like a 1.5 year old child... We all like to think our 1.5 year old child is the greatest... Just something to think about.

Pauline keep working with him, 4 months is a little young to try to protect you but at least he is brave enough to bark and approach. I'd keep him confident and not let anyone discipline him but your family right now. Work on plently of obedience and make sue he has things to chew on so he doesn't playfully chew up your house.
Once again trying to treat a dog like a person will make the dog think he is the alpha when he gets older, so don't let him sleep your bed or sit on your couch. If he wants to lay in your lap you come down on the floor to him. Then assume the alpha roll up high on the couch you can still pet him. But don't treat him like a person or you are heading for trouble. Its a dog law of nature.
I will have to agree with the board 4 months is too young to bank much confidence in a puppy. You should be there to protect him right now, because if you don't it could ruins his confidence and marr him for life. If you follow what theses people you tried to mock state, he may turn out to be a very good dobermann.
