I am about to start training to run a 15K race. This month I am running 1 mile 3 times/week and building to two miles. Next month I will do 2 miles 3 times/week etc...
Can my Dog run with me? I have never ran with a dog before but I have seen people do it. Can he train with me or will this hurt him?
John can he walk on a leash well, you want him to try to keep up. If he can't walk on a leash well, then you will be dragging the pup along. So he want enjoty that too much. I think this is the 1st issue. 2nd issue I think 1-2 mile runs are too far for a puppy, wait until he is a year old and heels and or runs at your side well.
At six months he may try to keep up but there will be distractions that will cause your training to falter. You have to work up to this.
Half way through I think he will get tried and you will have to slow down for him or pack him, six month is still a puppy. In short I think its too hard an ordeal for a puupy fresh out of crate.
A year old GSD would enjoy that!!
The puppy is too young to run at any distance, especially a hard surface such as pavement or concrete. The pup needs to properly develop it's hips and joints before you can take it for long runs.
My dog and I jog all the time but I wouldn't do it if he was still a puppy.
There are some exercises, that a puppy can do.
And will enjoy.
There are things you can do sparringly with a 6 month old pup to keep him active and in shape. Like teaching him to fetch and walking him in the park on soft surfaces.
But 1+ miles runs is too much for a puppy. Right now I train by myself and wait until next year.
While I do not jog with him, we do walk quite a bit.
I take him on two or three brisk 1/2 mile walks every day because he is so energetic. This seems to calm him down some.
No, a half mile walk is not so much. But the same half mile at a steady, pounding trot like a pup would do if he were jogging with you would be too much at this age.
Nows a great time to introduce your pups to the water. Swimming is the best excercise for dogs hands down. It's harmless on their joints and tires em out quick.
