I was wondering how well German Shepherds deal with cold weather. I know many people have dogs that live strictly outside, but My 5 month old GSD stays inside at night, and goes out to his rather large pen during the day when we are away. I put a wooden decking type floor in his pen so he wouldn't be on the ground. He has a dog house in his pen, but he doesn't seem to like to go in it too much, so I was wondering how much cold he could tolerate. I live in North Carolina, but we do have some pretty cold days here. My neighbor keeps his grown GSD in his outside pen 24/7. Thanks for any thoughts on this issue.
I believe the GSD adapts very well to cold weather. I have a 7 1/2 yr female police service GSD. She is outside 24/7 - 2 nights ago - it was 16 below zero / wind chill. She was asleep outside of her dog house (heated to 40 degrees). She has slept on the ground during a snow storm and been completely buried by the falling snow.
Give your dog shelter to get into, if they feel they need to go in. They will use it when needed.
Just like food, when they get hungary - they will eat.
I too am in NC. I have a litter of 7 week old pups. I keep them inside in an extra large kennel on cold nights. Since I am trying to kennel train these guys before they leave me, I find it useful to do so.
But...do pups really need to be protected from 10 degree nights? So many times I have seen them shivering while they eat their breakfast in 20 degree weather.
Thanks
Tammy
**Dr. Martin Luther died in 1546. He was a great reformer of the church, and a great GERMAN SHEPHERD!**
I have a 14 month old female that stays primarily outside. She has a dog house with straw. I live in Georgia so the cold isn't really a factor - although it was in the teens below zero last week! I probably spoil her more than I need to - I have been taking her inside for the night when it's in the 20s although I don't think she really needed it. She seems to get stimulated by cold weather - she just runs around with her breath trailing behind her!!!
well i am still wondering the same thing, here in maine temps are between -7 and 20 degrees during the day. my dogs are in at night. anyway, they both have doghouses, one is a 7 yr standard gsd and the other is 1 yr coated gsd, she doesn't like her doghouse she has made an indent in the snow and perfers to curl up right there, with the sun shining on her. so is she ok with these temps? like someone else said, if they get cold enough they will use their doghouse, right? i know my older gsd perfers this weather, infact they both sunbath during the day.
