I have a 4month old Dobe pup, my wife is not used to the dog smell and finds it irratating and dirty. What can I do to rid my house of this, I don't want to have to get rid of him, but she has mild allergies and some asthma. I don't let the dog run around the house but the house does smell a little. We keep it clean but the smell is what is bothering her the most. The pup is not really dirty either, just has the dog smell to him. Any suggestions as I don't want to have to get rid of him. He stays in the laundry room in the basement during the day when were at work and then I put him in the front hall at the outside door at night.
Thanks
An air filter wouldn't be a bad idea. This should clean out a lot of the airborne particles that could be irritating to someone with allergies/asthma.
Have you tried Febreeze? I haven't, but it is supposed to be safe for animals, and very effective at getting smells out of upholstery/carpets/clothing. I'm planning on trying it out inside my car.
I live in a small apartment with two dogs, and no dog smell <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
What are you feeding?
The only time my rott smelled like a dog, was when I first brought him home. He was on supermarket quality food, which the shelter feeds.
As soon as I put him on a superpremium food, no more dog smell, no more dog breath, no more gas, no more flaky skin, no more loose stools... Lots of benefits to feeding a quality food, and the smell is only one of them.
Are you sure your dogs don't smell? I walked into the local city animal shelter and it smelt, like it housed dogs and cats. After several minutes, I couldn't smell the ordor anymore. All dogs smell even yours, you just don't smell them. I'd say Frebreem would be a good start, maybe a weekly baking soda and brush out?
Brush his teeth, give him a bath once a week with a dog shampoo that won't mess up his skin (too much washing will mess up the skin and coat anyway), and brush him with a slicker brush daily. Rinse him off and towel after playing outside if it is muddy. Invest in incense, plug in air fresheners, and an carpet fresh.
And you might want to consider feeding a raw diet. I found that it almost totally eliminated bad breath and a lot of body odor. Call me crazy, but it did.
Make sure he doesn't have clogged anal glands, or is sick, or has some other problems.
If it comes to a head- get rid of the girl, it's hard to find a good dog. [Big Grin]
I keep hearing Febreeze is suppose to non-lethol to pets - but when it first came out - we bought a bottle - used it around the house, sparingly. We fought for 3 days to keep our Minature Pinscher alive from some type of chemical poisoning. It was the only thing different we had done - all of household cleaners / chemicals are up high in cabinets. We left them up high even after the kids were small and eventually left home.
We use a lot of baking soda for carpet - dry bathes, etc.
