just curious, i'd just like to know, it seems (from my own personal experiences) that male dogs seem to bond with the female humans better while female dogs seem to bond with the male humans. can anyone relate to this? is this usually the case? and why?

You know it is an interesting question you ask. My husband and I have a 11 month old GSD. It is our first pure bred canine and we both love him immensely. We are about 50/50 on the time spent (playing, walking, training and feeding). However; just recently his bond with my husband seems less - he is actually showing dominant aggression towards him. Growling, lowered eye/head (only looks at him sideways), tail/body tense up. With me he is always happy, follows me everywhere and is very close/protective of me. Hmm- go figure. It will be good to see some info on this subject <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

well i'm really concerned cause i have 2 females and i do everything for them feed them, walk them, train them, groom them, well you get the idea, however boyfriend does the fun playing with them, seems that i am just the mother and he is the "fun time guy", even though we live together, the dogs do see me a little more than him, cause he works longer hours. i just feel they have a closer bond with them, and i don't understand why, i do all of the work. can someone shed some light on this?

I'm not an expert in dog behavior, but I believe it has a lot to do with who the dog views as the alpha in the household. The bond will be strongest with whomever the dog views as the leader. I have two male (one intake, one not)dobermans and a female doberman. All the dogs have a much closer/stronger relationship with me even though my husband works out of the house and is with them all day. However, I am definately the leader and alpha with them, so it is obvious who they perfer. That's my take on it, I'm sure more experienced people on this board will give you other viewpoints.

of course that makes sense however, i am alpha also, i train them and make sure they always do as told. when i say bonding i mean, it just seems they are so overjoyed when he comes home and it seems they prefer whatever room he is in, instead of whatever room i am in. this is just things i have notice over time, when he is gone, of course they are by my side, i've had mostly females, they have all done that with this BF, not with old BF, cause he was not a dog person. but the one male that i had always chose me over BF.

I have two females and a male. I don't really see a difference. They all look to me as the supreme leader, since I do practically all of the training and the majority of their care.

I have had both males and females. My females have never been really cuddly with me. More aloof. My mom and dad have a female yorkie. She is definatly HIS dog, she loves my mom too, but you should see her go nuts when he gets home.
Since I live alone that is the best comparison I can give you.

I have not found this to be the norm. In fact I really doubt our gender has anything to do with it. The only times I see dogs with sensitivities to gender is when they are spooks and afraid of men, or women, because of it.

I think it has more to do with pack order and individual personality.
