122,000 doesn't sound nutzo to me.
You have to add all your overhead, facility, insurance, equipment, advertising, etc etc. .
There are a couple training places locally that do that kind of business.
In a successful dog training business you could come up with 50k-60k a year real income after all your expenses.

Oh come now Van Camp- for a solo dog trainer? That's what she is talking about!
She quotes a class as 12 people per class/ $95 fee for 6 weeks ( 1 hr class) then multiplys that times ten classes per week- that's *120* students per 6 week cycle continued on thru out the year!
That's a pretty high fee per class in my area. And that is what, almost 1000 students a year? Where the hell are that many students coming from? I live in a huge metro area, I teach for the largest Obd. club in my state, and we don't get that many yearly students- and that's with us having 11 instructors.
Sorry, I think this is just blatantly false advertising. Better someone knows what an average trainer makes yearly and is prepared and happy with that amount. I just don't like con men ( or women)

Hey Will, you will get a kick out of this, remember when I told you that I couldn't find any good QUALIFIED obedience training schools in my area. Well that school is about 1.0 hour (everything is one hour from me haha) from me. I called them, it wasn't 95.00 it was a 120.00 to learn sit, down, sit stay, down stay and walk nicely on a leash. They don't have classes every week either, there next group glass wasn't suppose to start for another 3 weeks, maybe they can't find enough people to make a 150,000 a year so they make it up in trying to take advangtage of people looking for a career change. They sent me there stuff about 1 month ago, it wasn't 12,500 it was 4,950 for 1 year of once a month weekend classes, of course they sent it with the basic training lit. Quite frankly I found it humorous myself. Heck, I signed up last week to volunteer at the animal shelter to help teach "dog manners" so more dogs will get adopted and I get 2 hours a week of learning how to train the little mutts for free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys. Not that hard to believe at all. Granted I did not follow the links, I am gathering info from the posts.
I ran group classes. 10 per class. 7 week courses. We ran it like a college. Hence Gaster's Canine College. Freshman class was $99.95
Sopomore was $124.95 Junior $149.95 Senior $149.95
I live in a small metro area 150,000 in the county.
We would run 2 classes Mon-Wed, 3 on Thurs and 3 on Saturday. for a total of 120 dogs every week. All classes were full and booked out about 8-10 weeks in advance. Go ahead and do the math to see what revenue was brought in from dog training. Oh yeah, it was just me doing the training so a solo trainer. I would have loved to be in a big area.

Just goes to show you that where you live does make a diferance.
I live in a rural area in Missouri and for obedience the cost is $50.00 for an eight week course. Classes meet once a week These classes are taught by a very qualfied individual. There are two classes for basic obedience. The reason being we never take over six dogs per class. I have always felt that with smaller classes that you can give more quality time to dogs and owners . After the eight week class is over. All dogs are tested for CGC. And as you know AKC now hands out the certificates. We have three people now that are certified to give the test.
All this is done through the THE ROLLA MISSOURI KENNEL CLUB.
As for me I only wish there was a Schutzhund Club near by. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> For that is what I would truly like to do. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Thank you Gaster, I didn't think the article was outrageous.
Lke I said, I know a couple of people that take home 50-60 a year doing solo dog training out of little joints they run, so add all their overhead I'm sure it has to be over 100K a year.
Then you throw in a few breedings a year of dogs, a few trained dogs for sale, boarding services, boarding dogs to train. . .you can make a living if you are good with people and dogs. . .and have the facilities.
I mean you have to be able to, people are doing it all over. Look in your yellow pages at all the dog training businesses.

I find it interesting that they forget to mention overhead.
Building
Power
Phone
Accountant
Insurance
Equipment
etc.
That doesn't even take into account the benefits that someone would be getting if they are working somewhere else (health insurance, retirement) and that as a trainer someone would have to work nights and weekends. Sure, it is a way to spend all day with dogs but it is not as profitable as they would like for someone to think. There's also the cost of learning how to train, which can be anything from a few weeks at trainer school  to learning a second language and spending time apprenticing in Europe.
The last thing the dog world needs is more people that are training dogs for a buck!
