I have a female spayed lab and my friend has a neutered male lab...We were hanging out and decided to let the dogs play together in the back yard. Neither dog barked or growled they just rolled all over the yard playing friskily. My friend's husband was concerned that the dogs would learn to act aggressively toward our children. She has a 1 yr. old and I have a 6,3,and 2 year old. Is this really a possibility? The dogs rarely see each other. They have only played in this manner twice. My dog is very submissive and hers is dominant, however it doesn't seem tobother my female to roll over and submit during their play. I told my friend's husband I would look into dog behavior to see if this could cause a problem if the dogs were to get together agin. Any help in this quest for info is greatly appreciated. Michaela
Just sounds like normal play. Don't think it's any big deal, just make sure all play is supervised, never know when that one time one of them might do something you don't recognize and bring trouble. One reason why mine don't play with other dogs. I can't control other people's animals, and I've got too much invested to let mine get hurt because of someone else.
Thanks for your reply. Have you ever heard of dogs becoming overly rambuctious with children due to frisky play with other dogs?? My dog is real good with my kids. I wouldn't want her to think she could play rough with them like she does the other dog...
I never heard of a corrulation between rough housing with dogs and becoming aggressive to child. Your dog seems to be fine with kids. Dogs know the difference between other dogs and kids. Your kids are part of your dogs pack (always above the dog and dog should be taught this). As long as the dog unstands its role within the family, you should be fine. But it's always a good idea to socalize your dog to other children and other dogs (on leash and supervised). Sounds like a very nice dog.
Thank you for your reply. I feel much better about letting her get some play time. Yes she is a great dog. We love her a great big bunch!! Thanx again...
