Hi all, Just got my HSUS newsletter for the West Coast. Was a notice on page five to please email them if you have experienced any problem obtaining home owner's insurance because of the breed of dog you own. This is being collected for the state of California only, as they are trying to inform legislators of how immense this problem is. Now's the chance to type a few words. The HSUS is joining some other organizations in an attempt to introduce legislation to prohibit insurance companies from making decisions based on the breed of dog you own. Their email: wcro@hsus.org
They should introdue a bill instead of insurance companies being able to rate based on breed, they should be allowed to rate HO insurance based on if your an idiot who should not be allowed to own any breed of dog!!
We have that same problem here. There's a guy down the road from me who has the meanest Golden Retriever I have EVER SEEN (its a mix I am sure). Leaves it tied up out back most the time to a tree (even though he lives on 10 acreas), but I bet he has Homeowners insurance, while they guy down the road from him who has a great Rotti probebly doesn't.
I was dropped from Met. Life insurance for owning a Rott. This bitch had an American UDT, a Canadian UD, a SchH II, and was a TDI therapy dog- she never had a bite in her life that was not on the training field. I simply recieved a letter telling me I'd be dropped, obviously I had never had a dog related claim.
Hence my feelings that most insurance companies are pond scum......
Yes this is happening all over. And I just think it is truly unfair.
I know that this is a working board, but our kennel club received a notice from the AKC two months ago that stated some insurance companies were willing to reconsider on some breeds if they had their C.G.C. Sooooooooooooooooooo I am thankful that my two GSD's have theirs, and my 5 month old little girl will get hers when she is old enough.
I guess the problem I have is the fact that they are my companions and I feel safe with them, and then some nut comes along and decides that home owners with certain breeds cannot be insured. So are they saying that " WE would rather have your home broken into than to have a dog that would stop a breakin"?
My oldest daughter just had to lie through her teeth to the insurance man. Her Pitbull is all white with black speckled ears (uncut). She told him Spirit was a Dalmation mix. Personally, I think there is more chance of being bitten by a Dal than a Pit.
I got dropped by my previous insurance when I inquired about their policy on pit bulls. Ended up saving money by switching all my insurance to State Farm (multi-policy discounts).
Darleen, there's a couple Goldens in my neighborhood that would be close in the running for the coveted "meanest golden retriever" trophy.
I think you are right Old Earth Dog. I recently had the same problem with GSDs.I switched to Farm Bureau, where the desicion is left up to the agent. So all is clear for now but I dread the day it gets worse.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
Awhile back, I recall seeing a list on the 'net that included various companies and their policies on dogs (AKC site maybe?). Anyway, I found Allstate's listing on that site, which claimed that they don't discriminate based on breed. That's why they still get my money, and I'd jump in front of a bus before I'd give one nickel to a company that draws those lines in the sand.

You will note that Allstate does, in fact, discriminate based on breed. I'm going to have to call my agent to confirm this, but if it's true, I'm switching immediately.
Now, off to that bus stop...
