Hi folks,I need some opinions other than my own. Here's the situation,I have one GSD 16mo. and am about to get another young pup.Currently my back yard is 6ft.wooden privacy fence on 2 sides with 4ft.chainlink on the third side, and during the day when shes out on the back my female really loves going to the chainlink side and yapping with the neighbors dog or just checking out the activities. My neighbor has 3 small kids(whom my female adores)but he is ignorant of dog training and frowns on my backyard agitation and bitework, any way my question is this.My female is pretty much a homebody, but I'm sure that within 9mo.this new hi-drive male pup will be clearing that little 4ft. fence with ease.So 6ft.privacy fence on that side seems like the perfect answer for my male and my fretfull neighbor. But this will totally close off my dogs from having any outside stimulus besides themselves and their toys until I get home from work, is that cool?
Ed. There is nothing wrong with total enclosure with a 6 foot privacy fence. As long as the yard is big enough for the two, I would definately recommend it. Especially if you are doing bite work. The dogs might love the children, but on the same not, the children might "challenge" the dogs, not realizing it. Just staring at them for example. Then you have the potential from problems. Also to less outside stimulus you dogs have, the more you can give, thus creating a better bond. I have my back yard totally enclosed just because I know my dogs could clear a 4 ft fence. The way they jump up, they could clear a 6 foot if they knew they could. Ever watch Ed's video on Mondio Ring where the Mal scales a 10 foot wall!!! For safety sakes, I would. It won't be detrimental to the dogs at all...
This is a personal preference thing - for me, I wouldn't like to shut a dog off from the world that much. And a 6' privacy fence is not really all that secure cuz a dog can dig under it pretty easily depending on the ground. I prefer to put the dogs in large, secure kennels during the day, but let them see the world.
I agree with Lee, you may consider building a kennel area with chain link. Not too expensive if your handy and you can have a chain link roof if your concerned about jumping. This way you can keep your dogs seperate, safe and still in touch with the world while your away.
Buy an Innotek 5 acre model in-ground fence. Attach the wire to the top of the existing fences. This keeps the dogs back away from the fence. No dog is going to go through this to climb a fence.
These Innotek fences are better than current Invisible fences at about 1/5th the price - and Innotek makes and owns Invisble Fence. I have been to the factory and talked to the engineer - its a sound product.
Thanks for the replies,I actually do have a 10x10x6 pen that I kept my female in until she learned to potty in one corner and not the whole yard. But since then I really have'nt had a reason to confine her to a pen,I did have a problem with digging once but I extended fencing along the bottom and she has'nt tried it since. And I'm lucky in that she has no idea that she could climb over the 4ft. side if she wanted to.I know that this male pup will be a completely different cup of tea though. His sire is from Xero with Grim and Titus as grandparents and his mother is from Leary so I'm expecting him to be a delightful handful.I think I will probably go with privacy fencing all the way around but I have a feeling that when a dog is brought up closed off from seeing regular daily activities(neighbor kids playing, mailman, garbage man, etc.)that whenever they do leave that environment everything is much bigger and disproportionate, but thats just a feeling. Thanks for the input.
Mr.Frawley, this Innotek is intresting but I have two questions. Is placing the wire along the top of my existing 4ft. fence safe if a pesky kid were to grab it? and with two dogs do they tend to bite or tug on the collars? Thanks.
