Hi everyone,I have 3 days before I go pick out my new czech pup.He is from great working lines and I need some pointers on picking the best male out of 4 males. They are all dark to black sable and uniform in size.I want him for PPD and or sport. What puppy tests are best and what has proven accurate for most of you? Also, I'am aware of Bernhard Flinks score sheet but how does (pulling the box)and (holding the box high) work and what is it's purpose? They are 7 weeks old and all are little alligators when you walk in the pen,but since I have first pick I want to be sure of what I'm looking for since I will have him till death does us part,Thanks.
There are alot of factors going into this. The 'best' pup goes by many names. You mention PP and possibly sport. Why the possibility? What experience do you have with GSDs and dominance and so forth? I don't need to know these answers this is for you to think about. Czech lines tend to be a little on the defensive side. Still with plenty of prey. Just more defensive and quick to fight. Anyone who says they don't have prey drive come play ball with my girls...hope you're quick... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
The Flinks test is what I use on my pups when they are 7 weeks old. I have found it to be very accurate. It helps me place puppies.
The holding the box high is a quick indication of nerves and concentration.
You have to have a clear definition of what your goals are to get the 'best' pup. Can you still get a good pup with out that, yes. But for the 'best' you need to know what you are going to be doing with the dog. You can always change later and still have a 'good' pup.
I wish you luck. Please keep us informed how the pup does.
Thanks for the replies,I guess I should have clarified what I want to do with the dog better.First and foremost I want him to be a serious PD,and down the line if I think he can adapt to the transition I may train him in a sport.I know it's probably due to bad training but I've seen a lot of sport dogs whose focus is more on the sleeve, than stopping the bad guy and I dont trust that.Anyway thanks for the info on Flink's box test, the article I read said to pull and raise the box,but not why.By the way Todd, the Dam of this litter is a daughter of Lery Naspo, and the sire is a son of Xero and Chola. Have you had any dealings with either of these dogs?
There is a funny story about that...can't say as of yet.
I think you will find David a reputable breeder. You can't argue with the price of the pups. I would expect you would get your kick a$$ PP dog out of that. I wouldn't worry too much about having a sleeve happy dog.
Gee Todd,it's a small dog world aint it?If this litter has your vote I wo'nt even worry about any stupid selection testing.I'll just rub myself down in beef broth, lay down in the middle of the pen,and whoever gets to me the quickest and bites the hardest and fullest, gets to go home with me,Thanks.
