My 8-month-old Lab has been through basic obedience class and I have been working with him off-leash for a while now. I was going to put him through the advanced class, but I've been able to do most of this training on my own.
I want to proceed to the next level now. I'm interested in field work and maybe moving on to getting his CD. Jake is very obedient and has strong retrieve drive. One of the main problems I'm having is getting him to put the object in my hand. He tends to drop it at my feet.
I would like to learn the proper way to teach field work and to prepare for CD titles. Which videos would help me? Which ones should I get first?
Teaching the Motivational Retrieve ( Video 106) with Bernhard Flinks would be a cornerstone for your training, especially if you plan on going futher in your AKC Obd competition. The info in the tape will make the dumbell retrieve exercise alot easier to master, in my opinion.
And Ed has a Training a Competition Heeling Dog tape due to be out pretty soon. It will also feature Bernhard Flinks and I'm sure it will become one of the "must have" training tapes for serious dog trainer/handlers.
Good luck in your training!
I would suggest the Drive Focus and Grip tape first. Everything On the Motivational Retrieve tape is based on the Drive tape, as I'm assuming, will be the heeling tape. I'm waiting for the Heeling tape, although the Tom Rose Competition tape is good.
