I know that a lot of you out there may be breeders. What do all of you feed your dogs? What do you feel is the best dog food to feed? I know that I have asked this question before and I received some good advice before. However, I forgot a lot of the suggestions and I want to respond to some of the suggestions I followed up on. My dog gets diahrea about once a day. I looked into some of the suggested dog foods and they seem to be quite pricey. Can you tell me what you use and the prices I might be looking at? Do I need to make home cooked meals daily for this dog?? I guess I would do whatever it takes to help my dog, I feel bad for him. Also, you sure can't clean it up very easily off the grass (yuk!!). Please give me some advice in the kindest way possible. thanks!!
Raw, BARF, Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, whatever you want to call it, that's what we feed. I've yet to find a kibble yet that is as good for the dogs as a well rounded, raw diet.
Ok, I have heard of that, using raw food. What kind of raw food? Raw meat? can't they get diseases from uncooked meat like salmonella? Please give me some suggestions on what raw foods you use. Thanks!
then do a basic web search on BARF, it'll come up (A LOT). Basically we feed chicken, turkey, beef, pork, fish, some veggies (pureed), some dairy products (yogurt & cottage cheese). It's not a "throw it in the bowl" diet like kibble, it takes a little bit more time, but it's better for them.
I feed Raw in the evening and Innova in the morning.Whatever you decide, make sure the food is high quality and not full of fillers. When you feed a high quality dog food, you feed less, so what may seem to be a pricey food can end up costing the same or even less than your regular brand. Also consider that the less you have to feed, the less poop you have to pick up. Always an added plus.
There are pre made raw diets out there although they can be expensive. Many of us on this list do feed a raw diet but if time is an issue or health concerns look up the Whole Dog Journal and you'll see their top ten list of dry kibble. Try getting as close to holistic kibble as possible. Some good examples would be, Flint River Ranch, Canidae, Royal Canin Natural Blend, Wellness, Eagle Holistic. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
All great advice, thanks to all. However, what about his diahrea?? Will all this "good stuff" stop his diahrea problem? Or, should I feed him something else or supplement with something special to correct the digestive problem? Let me know if you are aware of anything that would help. Thanks
Young dog or old dog? anyway give Lactobacillus acidophilus a try-buy at your local health food store or try prozyme-worked great for a couple young dogs with loose stools
