Hi All. I've been reading information on Ed's website for a year now, but I'm new to the forums. I currently have a 10 month old, female, long coated GSD named Roxy. When I purchased her, I was specifically looking for a long coated female and was only planning on doing obedience work with her. She is mostly German show lines, but has a working line dog in her pedigree. Since I wasn't concerned with protection training for her, I was willing to go with the German show lines. She's excelling at obedience and, as expected, doesn't show the necessary drives to go beyond basic protection work.
HOWEVER, I'm now looking to purchase a male GSD puppy from German working lines for personal protection training. I'm really interested in finding one who is long coated. I know that it's a rarity, that's why I'm posting here. I would certainly never consider going to a breeder who "specializes" in long coats, as most of them are irresponsible breeders who also breed oversized dogs that couldn't do protection work to save their own lives. I don't want to have to go with a German show line and "hope" that the dog will have the drives for protection work. I was wondering if anyone knows of a breeder of German working lines, in the US or Germany, who has a history of an occassional long coated pup popping up in a litter? Thanks!! SAGlaze@aol.com

Most breeders try to avoid breeding dogs that throw long coats into their litters since long coats are undesirable, and considered faulty in regards to the breed standard. It's no different then the Yahoo's that are out there breeding only white shepherds. If you truly want a working dog, then the dog's ability to work should be your primary concern. Not how long the coat is. JMO
Oh, I know that most breeders try to breed it out of their lines. With using outside studs, though, you never know when a long coat can just pop up. I know I'm looking for the proverbial "white elephant" here.
Don't get me wrong, I am MOST concerned about the dog's working ability. I'll happily get a standard coat if my search fails. There's just nothing wrong with looking for that white elephant. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> After all, Ed found a white elephant in one of his old competition dogs, Casper.

I know of someone who has a coated male puppy that is a Crok grandson, if she still has him. Let me know if you're interested. Cathy, Chance, Jaden and angel Zoey snuggled deep inside my heart
