It can be a pain to ship dogs during the summer and winter because of temperatures. Airlines will only ship dogs if the outside temp is within certain limits.
You will have to deal with your climate for the life of the dog no matter when you get your pup, so I don't see a big difference for a puppy buyer.
That certainly wouldn't be something I would build my puppy choice around.
I do think it makes a difference. Puppies born in late winter or spring are much easier to housebreak if only because I don't mind going out so much with the pup. I guess this depends on what part of the world you live in but speaking as someone who lives in the midwest... i have found that the dogs I got as pups in the fall and winter don't get the advantages of pups I get in the spring and summer.
You can teach the puppy to swim and there are lots more fun outdoor events to take the pup to for socialization. You can start tracking too. Try doing any of those things in Indiana in the winter!!
The first 16 weeks of a puppy's life are crucial and I would like to pack as much positive stuff in there as I can. Hard to do when i don't feel like leaving the house because it's sub zero temperatures...
I have to say I agree with Cindy on this one. I brought home an 8 week old pup on December 12th of last year, one of the coldest winters we have had in a LONG time. If it weren't for the fact that I left a week later to go to NC and FL for almost 6 weeks I don't think I would have ever gotten the booger housebroken! Not because he didn't want to go out, but I sure as heck don't want to stand outside for a half hour waiting for him to go when it is below zero.
Socialization is much easier when there are places that people are able to speak instead of mumble through 15 layers of clothing.
The upsided to spring and fall is moderate weather... much better for wearing long pants to protect yourself from teeth!
I don't regret getting my pup when I did, but I can see where it would have been a total pain in the rear if I had stayed at home in Maine all that time.
