Hi, I dont know if this is the appropriate "category" but I will go ahead and ask my question anyway.
I have a 14 month old GSD that has been crated at night since he was 10 weeks old. A few weeks ago, I started to have him sleep on the bed with me. The reason is, Im deaf and the dog goes crazy whenever someone is at the door or he hears something outside and I need that "alert". Does this increase dominance issue between the dog and me? Will this make the dog think he is "equal" to me and start to challenge my pack leadership? Or does this have nothing to do with dominance?
I hope this makes sense <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Read the article I wrote titled DEALING WITH THE DOMINANT DOG. It's in the list of training article on this web site.
Your reason for allowing a dog to sleep on the bed is a legit reason. Allowing females to do this will usually not be a problem unless there is more than one dog in the house.
Allowing a male to sleep on the bed for a deaf person can be ofset by following all of the other rules of dominace.i.e feed him after you, don't allow him on other furniture, don't allow him to tell you when to pet him, don't allow him to go through doors or down steps before you etc etc.
Should the average pet male be allowed to sleep with its pet owner. - NEVER !!! But would I do the same thing if I were deaf - Yes.
Also remember that dominance related aggression tends to develop between the ages of one and three years, so your dog is still young enough that a problem could develop.
