I'm getting ready to place an order for the "Your Puppy 8 Weeks To 8 Months" and the "Basic Dog Obedience" video's. Along with the ball on a string and prong collar.
My question is, which prong should I get for my Labs. I have a Sprenger X-Heavy prong that I use on my 1 year old lab, but have a hard time getting a good correction with it. His neck isn't very big so it only has 5 links in it. I was thinking about getting the 3.0 mm prong but want the stainless steel one and it only comes on the 2 larger sizes.
I don't know what it is with pinch collars these days. I used to have one for years which was absolutely perfect--it was called "medium", slightly larger that the smallest, but not as large as the rest of them. Well, I lost it a few days ago (darn it!) and when I tried to replace it, couldn't find anything close (checked every store in the city). The "X-large" is just ridiculous--wouldn't use it on a mastiff. "Large" is too large, so I ended up buying "small". It's OK for obedience.
Ed, do something about it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> !
im not to sure boutwhy every one uses prongs im not saying they are not great but i have used a springer chain for 1.5 yrs on my older shepard and plan to with this pup i need to get a prong for my fathers dog cause a chain does not cut it for him . but am i wrong for useing a chain my dog seem to take to it well " well he don like it when i correct him but u get the point"
The more people that I meet, The more I like my dogs

I didn't use a prong collar on my pup until he was about 8 months old... and only then out of desperation (traveling with a bitch in heat and no sleep... patience gets a little thin!) However, I do not like regular chain or choke collars because they can do damage to the trachea. Even if applied correctly. The pinch (prong) only pinches the skin, not the structures beneath it. So for me, it is fur saver on the dead ring, flat collar (leather or nylon) or prong. Your mileage may vary.
Originally posted by Jody Potter: most people NEVER learn to use a choke collar properly..that is why a prong works so nice for most.. My thoughts exactly!
IMO choke chains should be banned. Prongs are alot less stressful for dog and handler. As Deanna said, prong/skin....choke chain/vital components of the throat.
