if you live in Louisville then Mike Diehl is not a 5 hour drive. I live in Northern Indiana, 3 hours north of Mike Diehl's club and it only takes me an additional 2 hours to get to Louisville.
I would check the Schutzhund USA website, there may be some clubs closer though, maybe Cinncinnati or Bowling Green? Not sure of the mileage to either of those cities.
Cindy,
I also live in Northern Indiana (Crown Point) and actually got my 7 mo. GSD from Mike Diehl. I have talked with Mike on several occasions and have made plans to go to their club, but it seems like a 2-3 hour drive is a bit excessive when I consider the frequency I would like to go. Do you know of any other clubs in our area? I also thought about trying to recruit several people in our area to start a club. What do you think?

In my opinion, the problem with Schutzhund in this country is the amount of distance we have to travel to get good training. for years (and I mean years!) i traveled to Western Indiana Schutzhund club every single weekend, year round. My life is more complicated now so it's harder to get away every weekend but if you want to be serious in the sport and you don't have a good club close by you have to spend a lot of time and money on travel.
I would recommend Bill Kulla's group, they train Saturday, Sunday and sometimes Thurs and Friday pm too. They meet in Grayslake IL and the surrounding area, training in the evenings is sometimes in St. Charles. His phone number is 651-214-5357. Tell him Cindy sent you!
I have known Bill for close to 20 years and he has started several of my young dogs in bitework. He is a national and international level competitor and has really good understanding of how to bring a dog along in bitework training. I can do the tracking and obedience myself but at some point I need a helper and I prefer someone with a lot of knowledge and experience with a broad variety of dogs . How's that for an advertisement! lol
Here is a link to some photos of my young male Leerburg dog meeting Bill for the first time 7 weeks ago. http://kaiserhaus.com/lynck2.htm
