Does anyone know how common a black and tan working dog is. I keep reading that most working dogs are sable in color, and I was just curious to know if the Black and tan is a comon color also? I have 1 of each, 1 black and tan and one sable I love them both and it's not that color is important in any way shape or form.
There are A LOT of working bloodline dogs that are black and tan.
Sable is genetically dominate over other colors, thats why you see so many of them in the working bloodlines where one would hope color isn't a consideration in breeding. But there are bungloads of working bi-colors, black and tans, and blacks out there.
The rare color you will see is the black and red working dog. . .doesn't really happen that often.
Ed that doesn't sound good?? Who is his Sire and Dame? Is he suppose to be from working back ground? I've seen White shepherd owners wanting to breed their bitch to other GSDs, this combination can throw sable with white patches, solid gray sables, black and tans ect...
I think small area of white mixed in maybe ok, but a huge spot on his chest or face brings ???
Rudy is there any big difference in there temperment or dispostion, does one show any higher degree to work weather in OB or Protection?
Is one a better tracker then the other???
Inquiring minds want to know.
White on the chest can and does show up in working lines. My last litter won the white lottery (even though I didn't buy a ticket) and one pup in particular had a good amount of white (a chest, couple toes and one paw). BOTH parents have NO white anywhere, not even a few hairs. No white dogs in the background either. It doesn't mean there is a white dog in the woodpile so to speak.
The white on her feet has faded considerably. I am sure by the time she is full grown no one will know it was there other than people who saw her as a youngster.
My point is that it is not uncommon. I damn near had a heart attack when that paw was the first thing to come out though!
Maybe Cindy will share the story of a dog she bought with a 'small white patch' from belgium.
