My 1 year old GSD has started eating his own crap. I have no idea why he does this. As much as I have come to love him, this is something I cannot live with. I will not be licked by a dog right after he does that. Are there other dogs that do that, or is he mentally ill? If I cannot break him from this, he's out of here...I've had him since he was 8 weeks old, and my whole family loves him...He is also turning into a night barker. Please help!!!
Coprophagia (the clinical term for stool eating) is not totally uncommon, so don't think your dog is nuts. Best way to stop it is to pick up after the dog immediately and/or try a product called Forbid. Meat tenderizer in their food is another home remedy, it supposedly makes the stool unpalatable.
My GSD had a similar problem for a while. I have tried forbid, meat-tenderiser, nothing seemed to work. I then switched from one food to antoher, and started adding raw chicken, meat, and some other stuff I would cook up for him. Eating poop stopped right the way. I personally contribute this to low-qulity food I was feeding, as compared to some better ones:
was Eukanuba, switched to Solid Gold <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I took care of an ASS once that had this problem. She would poop, turn right around and start to consume it. She also found gorging on my horse manure pile to be a fun past time. I never realized how much until she came into the bedroom one night and threw up a load of crap. The smell was awful. We crated her and in the morning she literally exploded from both ends. I don't know what she got a hold of, but it did not smell good! We tried all sorts of remedies and nothing worked. I am not sure if her owner ever broke her of the habit.
