Well I had Ken Schilling take a look at Ivan, he has a company called Schillings Law Dogs in Eugene. He just looked him over and did some basic walking on leash and simple obediance too see how he reacts and did some other stuff I ddint' know what it was. Anyways he said he was a real good dog, but low self confidence. He said obvious he has had some obediance training but not enough. He found that Ivan does not have a high ball drive, he is interested in the ball but its not high so probably not a good candidate for police work. So we are going to try to find him a home with an experienced handler of dogs, not just the regular fido. And hopefully a home where he can be an indoor dog most of the time, and get lots of continuous training. Thanks for all the good suggestions from people, I will start working on his confidence today.
Obedience training gives a weak dog confidence. Instead of being in a state of worry, they feel more at ease because they know what is expected of them. Glad you were able to get him evaluated. Maybe contacting a local rescue would be a good way to place him. You most likely could keep the dog in your home until a suitable home is found, making the transition easier on him.
