I have recently acquired some leather tugs with rough side out.
After they get slobbery and dry they are "brittle". I know how to care for finished leather with saddle soap and neatsfoot oil but am not sure of what to do with the tugs that are in their mouths so much.
If you aren't interested in keeping the suede pretty then just treat them the same as regular leather and brush with a firm bristled brush when dry (veggie cleaning brush would probably work). The suede will probably still stick down in some areas but it won't hurt the leather (only the appearance).
If you want to keep them looking pretty then buy a suede cleaning kit. You can also buy special soap made for riding breeches and throw them in the washing machine, but I haven't tried the soap so can't tell you how well it works. I have seen breeches washed in the stuff and they looked fine.
