Has anyone encountered any bad batches in Solid Gold??? My dog was fed Solid Gold for the past 6-7 months, and he has been the healthiest ever. Solid stool, no poop eating, no womiting. However, someone told me, that they were told by the store that ever since Solid Gold company was acquired by one of the bigger manufacturers the quality has declined, and that I should switch to something comparable, like Precise. I did. My dog now has been sick from Precise, plus he went back to eating his own poop. Seems like something is missing is Precise. Any thoughts?? Anyone is feeding Precise but maybe adds missing ingredients????
Solid Gold makes a decent food, but it is not the best. The warning that your friend gave you is unfounded. It all started because Solid Gold is made in Canada, and a month or two back there was a Mad Cow disease scare or something and all meat products from Canada were halted for a short period. There is no Mad Cow in Solid Gold, and it is fine to feed your dog. However, if you want the best production dog food out there give your dog Wellness brand dog food. It is of noticeably better quality. It costs a little bit more than Solid Gold, but I think it's worth it.
I don't think Solid Gold is made in Canada, the very similar product Holistic Blend is tho - they only differ with cranberries and blueberries being used.
I heard so much about Wellness. I found a place that sold it, but I had to drive 40 miles to get it. For some reason, my dog does not like fish. The Wellness smelled like fish, so my dog wouldn't eat it. I went back and got another formula of Wellness. It smelled like fish as well. I called the store this time, and was told that ALL Wellness food smells like fish, so Wellness is out. Why does it all have the same smell? He does very well with Blackwood now.
Some of the Blackwood smells like fish too! When I was using the 2000 with Auster it certainly had a fishy smell.
IF solid gold works then why change? It can cause hot spots in some GSDs, which is why I never tried it. Auster gets California Natural with a little bit of Wellness, Avoderm, and whatever I can find that I think will not bother her stomach. It's mostly Cal. Natural Chicken and rice with cottage cheese on top.

Solid Gold changed the company that was doing their milling. They upgraded what they had. My dogs went through a short time period where they had loose stool, but that went back to normal after a week. The company sent out letters, explaining what had occurred. They claim the food is richer, because of the new milling process and that is what caused the loose stool.
