I have never seen dew claws on the hind feet of GSD's. My bitch just had a litter and 4 of 7 pups have dew claws. Is it normal or do they need to be removed?
In my recent litter of eight pups, 4 had rear dewclaws. I had never seen them before either and neglected to remove them when the pups were little. Now that they are four months old it is a veterinary procedure requiring anaesthesia and stitches! The vet said you can just clip them off with a hemostat-yourself-when the pups are under a week old. I recommend taking them off since they snag on things and can sure cause problems later. If nothing else, have your vet remove them soon. He/she may come to your place if you don't want to take the little guys into the office.
Hi Cindy, dew claws. LOL.. I have them within one of my own mal lines that I have been breeding.
I have even seen double dews on the rears once in awhile.
Dew claws are in fact normal. Selective breeding has eliminated them from most breeds.
All canines at one time had 6 distinct toes on each rear foot. If you ever get a chance to see a well bred Beauceron from show stock not working then you will see a foot with 6 individual paded toes.
