I don't often start conversation threads, but here is a fun one.
Max quotes that people like? German or English. . .
This one is on top of my list, seems to cover the basics. LOL
"The most striking features of the correctly bred German Shepherds are firmness of nerves, attentiveness, unshockability, tractability, watchfulness, reliability and incorruptibility together with courage, fighting tenacity and hardness."
- Max von Stephanitz
Didn't expect much did he?

I stopped liking Max's book when I read the part about any GSD that is a finicky eater should be shot....since my first GSD was at that moment walking past the steak in his bowl with a sneer on his face.

Lee,
Consider the time period that Max was writing from....
Remember that it was a common practice ( in Germany ) to cull GSD litter's that had more than six pups in it - anything over six and the breeder put down the weakest pups.
A German breeder told me that in the old days that put all the puppies over on the other side of the whelping box, and that the ones that would crawl to the bitch were the ones that were kept.
Trying to produce and maintain a real working breed required making hard decisions sometimes.

It's too bad time changes some peoples views on things
Now to get back on topic....
I like many but this one comes to mind;
"The breeding of shepherd dogs is the breeding of working dogs; and this must always be the aim, or we shall cease to produce shepherd dogs."
-Max von Stephanitz

Actually Will, I agree with the guy...tho I wouldn't shoot a dog like that, they SHOULD be spayed/neutered for sure! A pet quality dog should stay a pet ONLY (and no, I never bred that dog....I just used him as a pillow for the next 12 years!).

If ever our breed needed rescue.....it's now. Max's original philosophy should be the base for all breeding programs. The biggest question that remains unanswered in most breeding programs is "why". Reproduction without purpose is absolutely disasterous, look what it did for the human race. Lee's remark on spaying is the most practical advice offered to date. Seeking the advice of those more sucessful and experienced before breeding seems so logical yet so infrequently done.
Being a responsible consumer in ANY breed should be a dog ownwer's first reponsibility. Resist impulsive decisonmaking. I urge those neophytes ( after 15 years, I still consider myself as a newcomer, there is so much to learn) to the breed to look, study and ASK QUESTIONS of breeders. Ask them why they elected to breed a given pair or to continue a certain line. Support those organizations that support the true GSD and visibly and vocally defy those who don't. Take the time to share experience and resources.

One interesting quote I remember said he wasn't really particular on color, as we are. The quote said the pronounced colors are only more appealing to the eye. So if that's true(not 100% sure if it is, I'll see if I can find that page again), why are people so prejudice about white dogs?

Actaully he said in the zuch reports that he wrote that the white dogs should be drown if they show up in litters.
He also wasn't partial to solid black dogs either, but the white he believe to be incorrect for the breed. Other than that I've not read more than a few passing comments on color. His partners though, they felt strongly about the dark pigmentations being necessary.

Here's a personal fav, one that even many Max fans haven't heard before:
"Take all your gun-shy dogs out of here!"
Max shouted this at an SV Sieger Show in the early 1920's. He said it immediately after he'd walked into the exhibition ring, and apparently not altogether pleased with the quality of the dogs being shown, shocked the show crowd by drawing his gun and firing it. A number of dogs were subsquently excused from the show.

Thats a great one Laura. I head the story a little differently. I heard he was at the sidelines and ran into the ring shooting the gun.
Either way. . .funny mental picture of a number of dogs (and handlers LOL) jumping out of their skins and breaking.
