In my yard I have a 2 ft wall that my 10 month old gsd loves to jump off of as he runs around the yard. It is not something that is movable.
Is this a problem? I've heard that you should not let the dogs jump until they are older.
He recently hurt his left front leg and was limping for a day(this could have been from the slipping he was doing in the mud as he was running). I took him to the vet and he advised to put him in a small area for a week until he was walking full stride again. We did keep him penned up in the smaller area and starting today we let him out into the bigger yard for only an hour instead of most of the day.
He seems to be fine and is off and running again, no signs of any limping and is putting full weight on his left leg.
Any advise about the 2 ft wall would be appreciated.
depends on how often he jumps, how hard he lands, etc....in general, I don't like to see any youngster putting stress on joints...jumping, long runs, cycling etc should all be limited...NO FRISBEE catching!! Besides ACL tears, hairline fractures, eventual arthritis from overwork...even jump training should be done in a limited controlled manner over low jumps - just like with horses, you have to worry about long term soundness when working with youngsters.

We also have a retaining wall the dogs love to take a running flying leap off of. Our GSD often hurt his leg from this. I tried putting up small portable fences that you get at Home Depot and they just knock them down. I finally put up a chain link fence making it impossible to gain access to the main yard without me letting them out there. Its not too expensive about $200 with nothing fancy. Saves the grass too!
