Hi, first to introduce myself and the dog; my name is Ivan Sarac and i am from Croatia. Dog name is Rei and she is 3 months old GSD (if someone can tell me something about parents - http://balrog.posluh.hr/kirdags/vijesti.htm
I am not new to GSD, as my previous dog was one(bitch, died last summer in the age of 13), but she was attacked by pit bull at the age of 4 months and was a very nervous dog. Also i was a kid than and knew nothing of training (i guess i am making an excuse for keeping dog on the leash for 13 years when around other dogs ) so she was never off the leash near other dog.
I am given new chance with Rei and i want to do it right, so i might worry over nothing with this question, but...
So here goes question: since i live in country side where there is no traffic everything is nice and quiet. Last week i went down to town with my dog and after walk through the wood we are by the busy road and she doesnt like it (not running away
but comming to my leg) and she behaved differently than at home. I did not want to push it so i went home after a short walk by the road. Today i went there again and she did not like it again but she did sit, down and come (little slow) and even played with the rug. She jumps back when truck goes by, but i took her to see it after it parked and she went little cautious (my english is bad ) but she sniffed it and ignored it after that.
Is this behaviour normal or i have weak nerved dog and what should i do. I would try to get into sport with her and get her titled (IPO 1 is my goal since i have very little training experience. As far as i can tell she has good pray drive, very big food drive ) and is not afraid of other animals or people.
Thanks in advance and sorry about bad english and a long post.
Ivan,
It just sounds like you need to socialize you dog to the noises of the town more often - your dog will need to encounter traffic noise on a more frequent basis so that she can se where it fits into her world - whether it means a threat, or just something to ignore.
A lot of us that live in rural areas of the United States have to do the same thing that you'll need to train your dog for.
Good luck!
And your english was just fine!
