I have been working with my nine month pup and now have her trained to bark at the door when someone knoks. She will bark to tell them she is her and will let them in if I say "come in". But she will not bark or move if they just walk in the door. My best friend who lives upsrairs from me can walk in the house and keasha(dogs call name)will not bark. If he knocks on the door she will run to the door and sniff at it and bark. How can i get her to bark when people walk in. My wife is afraid that if someone should walk in then our dog will not bark to tell us or will not not stop someone with bad intentions. I have two young children in the house and would like to know that they will be safe. When she (the dog) is two i hope to have put a SCH one title on her. would this help. Or will i have to wait till she is two and then work her in defence work.Any ande all thought on this would help. please do not be afraid to tell me what i can do to help this. Thank you all for your time and help

I think that a well bred german shepherd would know the difference between a stranger you have let in and one that has just walked in unannounced. Besides wouldn't most criminals be detoured by a barking dog at the door?
If you are willing to deal with the negative aspects of the work, you can easily train a decent dog to have an aggressive bark and challenge strangers.
By negative aspects I mean once you get a dog to bark in aggression, it isn't always as easy to get them to be quiet. You have to train for both, a quiet command and the barking.
keasha(dogs call name) will bark at the door when someone knocks at the door. I had to wait till she got a little older and it came on it own. Now if i could get the same kind of bark out of her when working with a decoe/tug/bite sleve

This is what my trainer has been telling me since Koda came into our family. And for awhile, I didn't see it, but he does know the difference when something is wrong and when it's just night noises. Just last night (this has nothing to with strangers though) I was super tired and was in a deep sleep, Koda started barking, not a threat bark, nor a I have to go out bark, it was wake up wake up. Well, my 2 year old son was crying at 3am and I didn't hear him but Koda did. I usually hear my kids if they wake up so he has never done this before. It was nice to know that he would do something like this. It's just another one of those things that tells me if something were to truly go wrong, Koda would tell me. Koda is only 8 months old. But the bond between me and him is great. I notice when I start to feel uneasy about something when we are out, he comes and sits in front of me facing out. It's like he's saying "Just try to mess with my mom". I know he's young for this but it's just the sense I get. To this day he has never barked at anyone, but there are just certain things he does that insures me that if something isn't right, he will let me know. It just took me awhile to figure this out and say hey my trainer was right AGAIN! Not that I didn't beleive her, it's just one of those things that hits you in the face, "Ahh this is what she was talking about". Hope all of my ramblings help some.

Not a bad point. My "killer" Golden Retriever would make even the bravest think twice listening to him bark. If you did not see him...you would have no idea what was behind that door.
Great watchdog.....he would watch you come in and strip my house clean.LOL Truly a big baby.
Seriously, for most people, this is all they need. A deterant watchdog not a tear you to shreds Personal protection dog.
Everyone in my "hood" is already scared to death of my 5 month old pOlice dog  . They don't realize it's the crazy little MFn JRT that's gonna do a job on them.
