I have a mal and he is almost 9 years old he is my narc dog. Here recently when he finds the drugs and I give him the toy (tuggie) no matter how hard I try he will not "out" for me he does this in training too... he used to do it fine before. I have to almost choke him out with the "pull up" on his collar and he is to the point of passing out and then he lets go.. I dont want to hurt him. he watches when I am training my GSD to replace him when his time has come to retire... Any suggestions?
Have you tried teaching him how to out by trading toys?
It is always a pain to fight the dog who doesn't want to out because it just increases their desire to hold on and makes them anticipate having to give up the toy. . .which makes it even harder to get them to out.
Yes I have tried that and it worked well... But he is very quick and he ends up with the other toy in his mouth and this time he has both ends in his mouth and fights me tooth and nail.. to get it back, and back to step one I go.. his aggression has dramatically changed.. he is very loyal towards me.. and we are the best of buddies but it appears as he is letting me know
"ok I am the boss and here is how its going to be" please understand that this dog has broken my nose (fault of my own) during a search as I had hin check a bed frame and he mistook it as "jump on the bed" and guess what was in the way? MY NOSE!! I have placed him in check several times (prior to this) and he listened but must I continue to do this
BUILDING DRIVE, FOCUS AND GRIP!!!! stop choking your dog and get the flinks video. it will teach you about taking the dog in your arms, calming the dog and the dangers of situational outs. i know it works! i just lost my old dog in dec but that's how she was. i had been taught by others to force her to out.....hanging, choking, etc. all that did was make her fight me worse. i wish i had a nickel for every time i've put in a plug for that video. heh, ed........
