I have a 20x20 solid fenced dog run for my 2 monsters affectionately called doggy desert. Trouble is that here in S. California it hardly ever rains so it gets very dusty back there and after a day of rolling around and general dog antics the monsters get a lot of dust on them. Consequently when they come in the house they bring it all in and I have a nice dusty film constantly coating everything. A GSD and a large Dobie can carry a lot of dust between them.
I was thinking of putting down shredded ceder back there which should retain some moisture and keep the dust down. Any other tried and tested Ideas? The dogs obviously deficate in that area, the solid waste is cleaned away weekly - but I wondered about the urine soaking into whatever i put down.
I'm in the same area and am using 2" bark chips. They eventually turn to dirt and you can add to it. My dogs are only in there for a few hours a day. It's not their kennel flooring, it's a fenced yard area. It works well for me.
I did the same thing had all the what "was" grass covered in bark by bark blowers that we have here. I have had up to four dogs running back there and it hardly gets out of place and is easy to fix. They dont get dirty or muddy anymore and dont' seem to want to dig it up.
The problem you find with Pea Gravel with dogs that are in the sun is that you end up with burnt pads. Additionally, in California you will not get the obsorbtion that you would from the wood materials and the smell would bake on the gravel causing a terribel smell.
