My young male terrier (1yr & 3 months) has started charging at an old golden retriever and it's female owner.
Not sure why he has started doing this (maybe 'cos the golden is pretty old?). Anyway, he charges up to them, showing his teeth & snarling & sort of jumps at the female owners hand. (a man also accompanies the female owner on the walk, but my terrier seems to ignore him!)
If I get his focus prior to him bolting, he is ok. I've started putting him on leash when I spot them now & he seems fine (on leash) after I gave him a couple of corrections.
He does occasionally bolt at other people & barks at them, but I can never pre-empt who he will pick out!.
This takes place on an off leash bush walking area and we have seen these same people since he was a puppy.
Do I keep him on leash or what is the best way to train him out of this behaviour?.
Thanks

Julie, at 15 months old yout terrier is starting to feel like he owns the world. You need to work on attention exercises to get your dog to focus on you at your command. Once he learns, he gets corrected for not watching you. Some dogs, terriers in particular, can get fired up with a correction when they get aggresive towards another dog. If he is corrected for breaking attention, he will be less likely to wind tighter that if he is corrected for aggression towards the other dog. It's easy to overpower a small terrier but you need to out think them.
He's worked out that he is now stronger than my older female (who used to be able to bowl him over easily!)- and you are right!!, he thinks he's king of the world at the moment.
I'll keep up on the focus training & also crank up the general ob training too.
