My soon to be 2yr old lab is always trying to eat things. He likes to find socks and other small clothing, clean or dirty and swallow them. the latest thing he did, which I couldn't believe was that he was chewing on my wife's wedding ring and he literally bent it in half, she can not wear it. What the heck would provoke him to do such a thing??? It can't taste good!! why is he wanting to eat things???? Is there any way we can stop this behavior??? Please kindly help. Thanks!
Exercise the dog an extra hour a day. No ands, ifs, or buts. . .
A tired dog won't be looking for things to do (like eat your things), he'll want to chill the -F- out and chew on the variety of super cool tasty chew toys you are going to provide him with.
Find things the dog really likes to chew, good things like bones etc. Give him those.
Everytime you catch the dog chewing something he isn't allowed to you have to correct the dog, as long as you catch him in the act. Try to limit access to those types of things. Redirect the dog to the good things to chew and praise him.
I have a working Springer Spaniel and like Labs, these dogs are like owning goats, they'll eat anything! (Must be a Freudian thing with these hunting dogs, always have to have something in their mouth! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> ). So yes, you do have to pay them extra attention, extra exercise, extra bones ect...
Do correct him when you catch him in the act, my Spaniel is well versed with the "Leave it" command. Wouldn't be so bad if he just chewed things up and spit it out like my GSD....
Also make sure that he is getting a balanced diet. Sometimes if there is a nutritional deficiency, dogs will eat anything.
