I am preparing a term paper for my criminal justice major about the history of the police canine. In general I am finding individual department's history, but I am looking for an overall history dating back as far as possible.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, or give me an idea of the general history? I understand the use was started in Ghent, Belgium in the late 1800's then spread heavily into Germany where it was near perfected. Use in the states was not widely seen until the mid to late 70s, etc. Would anyone like to clarify in depth, or point me to somewhere I can get very detailed information?
http://members.tripod.com/~story_of_sara/www/Old_Dogs.html has some of the oldest pictures I've seen of the GSD. During WWI. VERY interesting that most the dogs are sable and they look nothing like the existing GSD that's in the American show ring.
My favorite is the guys at the table with the table cloth and dogs on the ground. Love that picture cause of the puppy on the guys lap. You may be able to email the owner of this site for more pictures and info they may have.
