Trey, if you have a harness you like but want to darken it I can suggest a few products to use if the leather isn't sealed. You can either dye it or use oil blackening (goes in harness oil).

I don't know Lauren. But I just wouldn't oil the leather loop that encloses the ring that you clip the leash to. I had a 95lb Mal on a pole and he blew right through it. Previous to putting the oil on the harness I had no problem.
Pure neatsfoot oil rots the thread....use something like Lexol or Black Rock conditioner to soften leather...clean it first with murphys oil soap or liquid glycerine if muddy...if really wet, clean it and rub in the Black rock...really softens hard muddy leads

Lee has a good point, it depends a lot on the oil used and how often. I use harness oil, but even then I usually just use it to soften up new leather a little.
If the harness was made out of latigo I could definitely see your situation happening. Latigo is known to stretch, and stretching makes it thinner and weaker. Harness leather would depend on the quality.

I use saddle soap almost exclusively. I also have a bottle of Lexol for really tough cases (the trenchcoat I bought that had been sitting in a closet for who knows how long without care).
I sealed one of Auster's leashes with Resolene and it has been incredibly easy to clean. The only downside is that its a little bit slicker. If anyone is interested I can post a link and before/after pics.
