The kennel run is almost complete!
Hopefully I have outsmarted the Border Collie/Husky mix and he will no longer be able to escape my backyard
However, it is a bit of an eyesore...
I thought that I would plant vines along the fence to cover it and produce some natural shade for the dogs. Could anyone tell me what vines I could plant that would be non-toxic if ingested??
I live in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). I would prefer to plant perennials but will plant annuals if need be.
Try clematis and/or climbing roses. There are some great Canadian bred roses. Check out Pickering Roses web site. I think they are in Ontario. With your male, make sure everything is planted a few feet from the fence if you expect it to stay alive.
I've used honeysuckle (the bush kind, not the vine), lilacs (old fashioned, not korean), and mulberries. They all worked well and didn't seem bothered by the urine or whatever runoff there was from kennel cleaning. The mulberries were volunteers I just go tired of fighting. Luckily there are a lot of them in the neighborhood, so nobody could point to ours when the birds stain the cars
I've had clematis for years. I think there are lots of plants that are toxic if the dog eats enough of them. I found out Elephant ears are supposed to be toxic. I had three pups here about 5 yrs ago and they shredded mine. No problems at all.
I just would rather be safe than sorry. The Malinois has a tricky digestive system and has mild allergies
We are preparing to do the RCMP Civilian SAR Dog test in October and I would prefer not have any setbacks!
