I wish I could answer this with 100% certainty but I cannot. Simply quetions should deserve simple answers. The fact is that females do not do as well as males for service work.
I have always said that females were not as tough as males. The fact is that they are not.
I totally agree Ed. Before someone jumps in..yes we all know some good tough females...we all know of a PSD that is female...yadda yadda yadda.
I also think it might have something to do w/ breeding. I'm not a breeder, but sure most will agree. If you have a female that could do PSD work, wouldn't you want to breed her? If this is the case, you loose the ability to work the dog while in heat and it makes it not reliable or cost effective for a PSD. When theses females are out there, they tend NOT to be sold, but kept back by breeders for breeding stock. With frozen, AI and stud dogs everywhere, the male is normally easy to find. A good foundation bitch is worth its weight in platinum not gold.
There are some PSDs that are female and the ones that I personally know were spayed. I also know of a retired security K-9 that was a female, she was a great dog.
Kelly...
Could you please list the departments you personally know that have female PATROL dogs?..police dogs, not some half ass security company that buys anything w/ four feet and a tail. They must all know something we don't. If they have some kick ass females, I'm sure some folks here would love to know where to get them for their breeding programs. Who are they???
Right off hand on the top of my memory without looking. Russellville, Arkansas has K-9 Anouck, handler Chris Ridenhour, and Marvell, Arkansas has K-9 Harley.
Great..a whole 2 dogs...out of the hundreds nationwide...even if you found 50..which I doubt you could..even w/ all your "research" it would make up such a small percentage of actual PSDs that it would almost be worthless. Never said there were NONE, just not enough to make a difference or prove the majority of females could do the work. I'm glad you found some in your backyard of AR...I'll leave the inbreeder jokes and Bill Clinton jokes off the post just for you..LOL
While I won't go as far as Ed saying I've never seen a good female do the work..the numbers just don't stand. I did actually work one female teaching a seminar this spring in LA that was a really nice patrol dog. Of the 30 something dogs at the seminar, she was the only female...but hey, this was Southern California...what do all thoses PD's LAPD, FBI, Burbank, Bev Hills etc..know about K-9..LOL..
