Has anyone had any experience with this venue:
Service Dogs of America
(Not sure where to put this question...I'll assume mods will move if necessary)

Ann,
Just use the search option and you'll see there have been a few threads about SDA - some postitive, some not.
It's kind of in a "watch and see" mode nowadays, time will tell, but if it is actually moving forward, it's at a snail's pace.

Thanks, Will...I should have checked the archives before asking! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> But it's the first I ever heard of this venue...
I read there is to be a trial in Sept, somewhere in Tenn. (?)

I read there is to be a trial in Sept, somewhere in Tenn. The first SDA trial is in Athens, TN on Oct 16/17th.
The DPCA/UDC IPO demo is Oct 15th in Crittenden, KY

I'd still be a bit more confident that any of this will come to pass if they posted little things like, oh say, who are going to be the judges for this organization.
Or if they had more than one point of contact listed under the "formed clubs" link. And that contact has been the single listing since the SDA went up - not a good sign.
Color me pessimistic, but I don't see this concept going anywhere.

Yeah table training...dressed in camo to boot! No wonder I have such a hard time living down the typical southern snips!

That is rather scary. I know some of those people and the dogs they are working. Will, you are correct, weak dogs and bad trainers. If these are the people involved with the SDA I don't see it as a good thing at all.

A few of the dogs on the one site were here in PA owned a couple of "breeders" who flooded the local area with puppies. I talked to one of the SDA "trainers" inadvertantly and was told he provided the dogs to a couple of the PA breeders.
After a couple of years, GSDs pretty much gone and breeders into small toy breeds - more pups per square foot, more dollars...lots of the GSDs ended up in shelters and rescues. I have met quite a few people with them, and although some are ok to even nice, there have been alot of BAD hips, with whole litters being put down by 2 years old, and weak temperaments.
It is a crime to promote these kinds of dogs as working dogs to novice and unsuspecting people.

Well, at least we know you the judges will be now.
Although looking at the judges page:http://www.servicedogsofamerica.com/SDA%20Judges%20info.htm
"1. All people applying must be experienced and well qualified in the area of dog training they will be judging.
2. SDA seeks people who have an established record teaching other people how to dog train, professional dog trainers are very desirable."
Experienced and well qualifed are always in the eye of the beholder..
