Does anyone know much about importing pups? My GSD puppy is coming from Holland in 3 weeks and I am a little nervous about it. The physical and emotional aspects of the airplane ride concern me. Am I over-reacting?
My pup had a 20 hour trip from Belgium. He was fine. The little turkey latched on to my pantleg and I gimped all the way back to the car with a piranha attached.
Dogs do get jet lag just like humans do. He will need to rest a lot for the first week or so. Enjoy the cuddly time while it lasts!
I think if it is a good solid pup you should have no issues.
Mine came about 3000 miles, was delayed at airport, and switched planes, all in all about 12 hours. Popped out of the crate like nothing had happened. Did her business (boy did she have to go!) among the noise of airplanes landing and taking off, grabbed the leash in her mouth and pranced to the car with us.
Thanks guys. The encouraging stories make me feel better .
I am new to this underground world of GSD owners and I am pouring through all the past discussions trying to soak up all the info.
I'd love to learn more about my breeder's reputation, but I'm not sure where I might look. Do many of the members here get pups from Holland and overseas?
Well it is certainly the kind of thing you should know well before you get your pup
Perhaps if you shared who is breeder, the intended use of the puppy, and the pedigree of the puppy (or at least the parents) people could give you more insight.
Yeah, give us some info Kelly. Breeders, lines ect. You should at least know that I have had some experience with dogs from Holland and Belgium so I will help if I can. I must say I have been pleased with what I have seen come from there.
Sire is Caleb von Jabora and Dam is Isa von San Marco.
As for intended use: companion and personal protection, possibly schutzhund. The pup will be living with myself and my husband (who works from home and can dedicate a lot of time to training).
Any thoughts?
But there are so many Sch3's in the pedigree (as per http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/search.html). I thought that that indicated good lineage. Is that site a reliable source to search pedigrees? How does one find out who is a showline breeder?
My understanding is that showline dogs are less desirable because they are bred for looks, with less regard for temperment. Do you think this is the case in this instance?

When you have seen enough pedigrees, you recognize certain kennels as showline kennels and others as working line.....it is also pretty obvious from the differences in structure. (the roach back and black and red are most typical of showlines)
If you want a good contrast compare the dogs on the BSP collection with the dogs on the BSZS results to see differences in structure and pedigree.
I have not seen too many mistakes on the site. Data is entered by people so I am sure it is not as reliable as an independant registry.
I do not know enough to comment about the particular pup you are getting.
