Hey troops, thought it might be fine to list anyone's favorite dog quotes.
I stumbled across this one a while back while going through my father's belongings. He used this as a reminder of responsibility to his puppy customers. He shipped this with the pups, and I shipped it with the litter that I bred this year.
"Today there is a little soul that flies into the West. Within him he carries a spark of hope, the hope carried down through all the generations that came before him. The hope that he will spark into a flame that burns hot and angry. A flame that will sear a mark upon any who view it. A mark that will leave little chance of being forgotten or ignored. The mark of fidelity, courage, and the ability to love his master unconditionally. These virtues he must grow in order to serve his master, for God gave them to this dog so that man need not walk alone in the dark.
Nurture this spark as best you can, and you'll have a flame at your side that will light your way in dark times."
He liked to be cryptic. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

My favorite is pretty well-known. Makes a Marine's eyeballs sweat.
"The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son and daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. The money a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps, when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action.
"The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and in sickness. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. When all other friends desert, he remains.
"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard against danger, to fight his enemies; and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in watchfulness, faithful and true even in death."
The oratory is quoted in full in another court case, State v. Stacy, 355 S.W.2d 377.
My posts reflect my own opinions, and not those of the Marine Corps or the United States. |

...and here's my two, if I may join in...
"Folks will know how large your soul is by how you treat your dog."
-and-
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

Kind of a favorite of mine, said of a dog in Celtic mythology, belonging to one Mac Datho:
For the dog was the finest that ever did bark,
And ‘tis said that his ancestor sailed on the ark—
As strong as an ox-team, more swift than a deer,
A heart that knew never the meaning of fear,
A gaze that was long and a temper quite short,
A custom of killing whole wolfpacks for sport,
A tail like a bullwhip, a tooth like a sword,
Of all the world’s dogs, this Mac Datho’s was lord.
The dog's name was Ailbe. Presumably the name came from Saint Ailbe, said to have been abandoned in the fifth century as a newborn, nursed by a wolf, then found and raised in a village. The tale goes that Saint Ailbe, on a hunt with others, saved the life of the wolf who had saved him; and the wolf ate at his table from then on.
As a friend used to say, "if it isn't true, it should be."
