Hi Will - just noticed that you are on the board - I have a quick question for you - I have a puppy, now 4 months old. Hes been on the rag since he was about 8 weeks old - but now hes teething, should i lay of the rag alltogether or just do do less work with it and give him a break while hes teething?
Your advise would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Tim, Im new to puppy hood as well but my Kane is 7 months now and I had the same question when he started teething. I was advised to take him off the rag. You dont want any pain associated with bite work and working the rag. Instead I was told to work on tracking and even tie Kane up and just tease with the rag to build him up. This may apply to you also. Im sure Will, will have good advice for you. Good luck!
I agree with Chastity as this subject has come up many times, and the response by most is usually the same. Lay off the pulling and tugging until the new teeth come in which can take a few weeks. You can always put the dog on a tie out and frustrate him with a prey item or toy, but do not give him a bite. This will help build drive. Take an old washcloth, wet it down and freeze it. This will give your dog something to chew on and numb some of the pain from teething. Good luck!
Yep, the frozen wet wash cloth is always a winner - Ed has that suggestion on his "Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 months" video, which I always recommend to my students in the Obedience classes that I instruct.
You can also pick up a soft toy from Pet Smart that does the same thing ( it has a liquid center that stays cool, like some baby pacifiers ) for about 12 bucks .
And tug/ rag work stops during teething - a miscalculation here and your puppy can end up with a negitive experience that you don't want. Let the little fella get his mouth up to speed before you restart any bite work.
I find that the teething period is a good time to work on puppy scent pads for tracking - that work is neutral for teeth/ gums and most people don't work enough on tracking early on ( I'm speaking of dogs to be trained for SchH, of course )
