Ok heres a topic that everyone should have an oppinion on. Do you allow you dog(s) to be inside the house or only outside?
I was told by Kanes Breeder that to have a dog outside or in a Kennel is cruel and unusual punishment. Well I had to laugh because I know he doesnt have all his dogs in his house. Especially being a breeder. (Although most of you know from what I have posted hes worthless)
So what are your views on it? Do you allow your dog to be both an inside and outside dog? Or do you keep your working dog outside and your "pet" inside? Just curious as to how you have made the choice that you all have regarding where the dog stays.

For me it's both. Outside pen during the day while I'm at work. Inside the house some at night, then off to their crates in the garage while we go to bed. My garage has AC so they are comfortable out there.

one extreme would be that the dog lives outdoors 24/7, very little contact with humans other than feeding, watering and kennel cleanup. the other extreme would be that the dog is indoors constantly and only goes outside to potty. i think you'll find that most dogs fall somewhere in between. at our house everybody has a magnum dog kennel and a dogloo outside and a crate inside. on hot days they all come in to the airconditioning and very cold days come in to the heat. most of the time they sleep in the house at night and are outside during the day. whatever the living arrangements are, i think the big thing is that the dogs' needs are taken care of. some folks have nice outbuildings to protect the dogs from the elements. there are some dogs that have a need to be "with" all the time, too. these dogs aren't happy unless they are in the house, going in the car and sleeping near you at night. others couldn't care less. they are perfectly happy dozing in the sunshine and looking around at what's going on. the dogs' coat and the climate do have a part in the decision.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers |

Well when I first got Kane he was inside all the time, poor thing didnt even want to be outside! But since then he actually preferes to be outside most of the time. During the day hes outside, I run a daycare at home so I think he likes the peace and quiet. We spend time in the morning before the kids arrive and during the kids naptime and then of corse when they leave. As far as at night I have noticed that he'd rather be outside in the kennel at night than in his crate in the house. Im sure because he has a little more freedom and room outside in the kennel. Once he is mature enough and able to have free roam of the house at night Im sure he will prefere the house!
Anyways he spends most of his time outside but seems fine with that. Durring the day he has free roam of the backyard. Is only in the kennel when need be.

Both. My terriers are out most of the day. At night my Border sleeps in our bedroom. The JRT sleeps with my son. The GSD sleeps in the gated kitchen till I get off my butt and finish his kennel run. He'll still have house privledges, but most of his time will be as a kennel dog.

Both, my dogs sleep inside and are always inside crated when I am not home. Most of them prefer hanging out outside during the day when the weather is nice, they would be unhappy if forced to stay in!

My 14 year old Labradoormat is an indoor dog. He's earned it. My working dog is kenneled, but will become an indoor dog upon his retirement. I'd let him in now, but the old dog does not share well. Outside on breaks is no problem, inside however is a different story.

Both my GSDs are inside the house, the younger one (4 months) is crated when were're out. The older one (2years) has full access in the house, except the bedroom, simply because i can trust him completley, and he makes an awsome house guard - ive tried to sneak into the house before and as soon as i enter the garden you can see him on full alert on his hind legs looking through the window. This would be enough to scare of would be burgulars but when he barks - that would scare anyone away!!

I have four dogs and they live inside. They are not happy outside unless I am with them. They all have free rein of the house while I am there and while I am out.

My two dogs, Sibe and GSD are outside during the day and inside at night after supper. I don't think it's really an issue if your dog lives in or out, but how much time you spend with the dog interacting. If you just throw them outside and never interact with them then YES that is cruel, but if you are working them, playing, giving them attention it really should not matter if they are outside most of the day. In bad weather of course they are in, WELL except my Sibe who enjoys a good Freezing Rain, or Snow Storm When it's bedtime then mine go in their crates because they are both young and not worthy of having full run of the house just yet. I also have rules about which rooms they are allowed in, and that will be in place even when they are old enough to be out of their crates at night. My dogs are very happy outside, they play and get rid of all that excess energy and I think it is healthy for them to be in the fresh air.
