I'm not new to the barf diet, my female gsd has done well on it for almost five years now.
However, my new male puppy gulps. He chews absolutely nothing. Any insight or tips on this? I've gotten conflicting advice. Some say don't worry, he'll be fine, others tell me I should go to minced food. Should I be concerned?
When Cyra started inhaling necks I went to leq quarters. I thought she was too small but she was able to deal with them...and they can't inhale those. (Oh gosh maybe some do <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> )
Lori,
I wouldn't worry too much. As I understand it, a dog is not designed to chew his food very well. I think they are supposed to take it down in chunks. Nancy, you might say that Yogi inhales leg quarters. He cracks the bones just enough to swallow the whole thing. He's quite the little pig! I started out with necks, then went to wings and he inhales them equally. I'm picking up thighs and backs today. Hopefully he'll have to chew them at least a bit! Thanks all
Have you tried freezing your leg-quarters first???
that is what I do with my dog.
I freeze them: it takes them longer to chew them, and they cannot just swallow the whole thing, they have to crunch it down
No, I never thought of freezing them. My 4 yr old has always chewed whatever I gave her. Venison necks, chicken bones in every form etc. This puppy scared me when I took him home. He sucked up the necks like i've never seen! I've been holding on to the wings with a pair of plyers and telling him to chew, which he does, but as soon as he's on his own he inhales! He eats like he's crazed. Otherwise his temperment is awesome. (DDR working lines) I'll try partially frozen and make him work a little. Thanks
