I have a 14 month old Chezh. shepherd.
Recently he has learned that by pullin on chain-link in his (10 X 10) kennel he can tear it up, and make an opening for himself. I have "patched" away a few holes, but am affraid, that eventually he will rip them up too. Good thing, my yard is fenced in, so I have another "barrier" for his escape.
What can you suggest I do, to stop this behavior??? I would preffer NOT to replace the kennel with a new one.
I would think you would have to replace your kennel with a new one. Either heavier chain link or go to the kennel with the straight bars. I wonder if you could use some kind of
E-collar system where every time he would bite on the chain link he would get stimmed..probably it's better just to replace the kennel you have with something stronger.
Magnum kennels or possibly the Optionsplus kennels (not as strong as the Magnum).
The Magnum kennels can be found at TSC stores. They are pricey but since they are welded rod they are Very sturdy. The drawback is that your dog will test this and the rod will not give like chain link- you need to keep an eye out for tooth injury.
As far as correcting this... once the dog has had success at it this gets tough. Verbal corrections or e-collar (if you can be there to monitor behavior at the time it occurs)is best. Otherwise, change kennels. Also, start giving your dog things to keep it busy in its kennel. Toys or other stuff that is interactive and can hold its attention for a length of time.
A word of caution. Even though you have a fence around your property, its just an extension of the kennel... that fence will eventually be breeched if the dog is inclined to get out and is already free of its kennel.
we use magnum kennels and nothing but. they run about $430 for 3 panels and a gate panel, but well worth the investment. much safer than chain link and last much much longer.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers
I have set up panels that I had a local welder do. 2" pipe and welded wire panels. It cost me half the price of the Preifert pens and is not baked on enamaled paint (used rustoleum) but they work great and my Zilo can't tear these up. He has in the past mangled up every containment device I have used. I had the guy do 4 12' panels with pipe supports every 4 feet then a panel with 3 gates one every 4 feet. Assembled it makes 3 12' X 4' runs. I covered them with steel panels and did a few other things to protect them from view. But the panels work great at hafl the price. I am having him do some more as I am putting in a kennel in my new horse barn.
