We "might" be moving back to my homeland. Does anyone have any experiences, advice or caveats for getting all the paperwork in order for taking your dogs over and hopefully avoiding quarantine? It looks like it takes about 7 months with rabies vaccs, blood tests etc.
I currently have 3 GSDs, 3.5 year old Bode, 7 month old Ariel, and 5 month old Elessar.
I'm moving to Ireland and I have been inolved in researching this heavily. The only way to get pets in to the Republic of Ireland and to avoid quarentine is to go through the UK PETS scheme.
The PETS scheme is being converted over to the EU Pet Passport scheme but the requirements are very similar. It sounds like you have looked in to those?
I was looking in to taking a young dog along with me and it seems like the details on that aren't available as of yet. Young dogs might be able to avoid quarentine as well however its TBD what a young dog is. Its starting to look like a dog that is under three months will qualify.
Thanks for your reply. Yes I went to the DEFRA website and checked in to everything. Must use certain vets, certain labs, certain carriers. It is all a bit worrying, I'm assuming if you did one thing wrong, your dogs would end up in quarantine for a further 6 months.
We are not sure if we are moving just yet, but since it is such a long process, I was thinking of getting started now. My husband and I are thinking one of us could go over first, with one of us staying behind with the dogs at least a few months until all the requirements are met.
There also appears to be a new form required from the USDA before leaving the country - a friend just had this problem before going to Europe for a competition.
