I have a 3 year old male GSD and just noticed today that he has this little film on the corners of his eyes. It is a little red(bloody) but one is smaller and the both look like they are from a scratch or something. He does run through the woods after the rabbits. I am just a little nervous about this and was hoping some one could help me by telling me what they think it may be. They don't seem to impare his vision but just showed up today. What could they be?? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brandon
Julie, What type of disfunction would cause this? Is it something that is just genetic or something caused by his diet maybe? I have never heard of this just tryinjg to get as much info as possible. He will be seeing the vet again today at 11:00am. I hope the outcome is better than what the last vet told me. Thanks Julie, I'll keep you posted. Brandon
It's genetic, but what other factors might influence it are unknown. The immune system decides the cornea is foreign and decides to try its best to get rid of it. The result is a lot of scar tissue (white) that impairs vision. Antibiotic, steroid, or immunosupressent eye drops can help slow or stop the progression.

I have done LOTS of research and have found that Chronic Superficial keratitis(pannus) is a disease that you can not cure. I Also found that the GSD may have a predisposition to this disease, but the damage to the cornea which starts everything is thought to be associated with UV radiation. A progressive change occurs where blood vessels and scar tissue invade the cornea, and usually begins in the temporal(outer) or ventral(lower) quadrant of the cornea. In severe cases most or all of the cornea surface area is involved and results in blindness. There are also other breeds that are effected like the Border Collie, poodles and Greyhounds. Here is a good link to this...www.eyevet.ca/pannus.html Most dogs start to show signs between 4 and 6 years old... mine happens to be just about 4.. Brandon
My female who is now 9 years old has had pannus for at least 5 years now. At first I did not now what was wrong and just thought that she had irratated her eye. I keep the disease slowed down with eye drops a antibiotic and steriod mix and that has worked. I do know that over time she will more then likely go blind.
